Dental implants offer many advantages over dentures
- A permanent and natural-looking solution to replace missing teeth. They look and feel like natural teeth and you care for them just as you would your natural teeth.
- You don’t have to worry about them coming loose or falling out of place. So, you can eat, talk, laugh and go about your daily life with confidence.
- Because they are anchored into your jaw, dental implants allow you to bite with the same amount of force as your natural teeth.
- They’re custom-made to fit the shape of your face, so they look totally natural and you can enjoy a comfortable fit, without any rubbing or irritation.
- In place of natural tooth roots, dental implants stimulate the jawbone, which prevents bone loss and allows you to maintain a more youthful appearance.
What can I expect at my dental implant appointments?
1. Initial Consultation
At this appointment your Dentist will chat to you about what dental implant treatment involves, advise whether the treatment may be suitable for you and give you an indicative estimate for the treatment.
2. CBCT Scan and Treatment Planning
A 3D CBCT (cone beam computed tomography) scan is taken to assess the volume and quality of the jaw bone in proposed placement area. If the scan indicates that there is enough bone volume to place an implant, the patient will be able to proceed to the next stage of treatment.
In the event that the scan reveals there is insufficient bone for an implant to be placed, your Dentist will discuss the alternative treatment options with you. In some cases, where there is insufficient volume of bone, a bone graft with a delayed implant placement may be possible. The same applies when we have to remove a tooth that will later be replaced with a dental implant.
3. Final Treatment Plan and Consent
Once your Dentist has had chance to review your CBCT scan, they will put together your final treatment plan. You will have the opportunity to meet with your Dentist again to discuss the final treatment plan and ask any questions you may have.
Once you are happy with the final plan and you are satisfied that all of your questions have been answered, you will be given a treatment consent document to sign prior to treatment commencement. It is at the point, interest free finance can be arranged if needed.
4. Implant Placement
2 weeks after final plan and consent stage
At this appointment the implant surgery will take place. The surgery typically takes around one hour for a single implant while multiple placements may take a couple of hours. Due to the nature of implant treatment, the dental surgery will look a little bit different to how it usually looks. This is because implants are performed using aseptic technique to minimise the risk of cross infection. While the treatment is not as dramatic as it sounds, it is advisable that you have some downtime planned post treatment to rest and recover.
5. Healing Review and Suture Removal
2 weeks after placement
At this appointment your Dentist will check that your soft tissues (gums) are healing well and remove any remaining sutures that haven’t yet dissolved.
6. Healing Period
8-16 weeks from placement
Following placement we must wait anywhere from 6-16 weeks for the implant to integrate into the jaw bone before it can be restored with a crown or bridge. This is to ensure that the implant is stable enough to withstand the force of biting and chewing.
7. Impressions
After the healing the period the implant will be ready to restore with a crown or bridge. Your Dentist will take some digital images of the area using an iTero scanner. These images will be sent to the dental lab where the new tooth / teeth can be made.
8. Attachment of Restoration
2 weeks after impression appointment
At this appointment your new tooth will be fitted. Typically implant crowns and bridges are fixed with a tiny (hidden) screw. Occasionally, the implant crowns/bridges are cemented into place. This involves screwing an abutment into the implant and then cementing the crown/bridge to the abutment. Your Dentist may need to make some slight adjustments so the new tooth feels and looks good in your mouth.
9. Review
2-4 weeks after fit appointment
Your final appointment is to check that all is well with your new tooth/teeth and make any final adjustments if necessary. After this appointment we would suggest regular check-ups with your Dentist so they can monitor your implant.
Dental Implants FAQs
Your questions about dental implants answered.
Dental implants are titanium or ceramic screws placed into the jawbone to replace the root of a missing tooth. There are different types of dental implants. They can support one or more false teeth and can also be used for crowns, bridges and dentures. Titanium is used because it is accepted well by the body and fuses easily with the surrounding bone it has been implanted into.
Dr Gahan uses Straumann dental implants considered by most implantologists to offer the best dental implant system thanks to its quality manufacturing and high success rate among patients.
They have shown 95-99% survival rates in clinical studies. Straumann apply a special coating called SLActive® to their dental implants, which increases the healing bond between implant and bone. This means the crown can be fitted to the implant around six weeks from the implant being placed, rather than the usual 12-14 weeks.
CBCT Scanner
At Finkle Hill we always strive to deliver the very best quality of care and expertise. This is why we believe that it is worth investing in state of the art technology which enables us to plan and deliver treatment with fantastic results. We have a CBCT scanner (cone beam computer tomography) which will further help our dentists to plan treatments such as implant placements, root canal treatment and extractions. We also use ITERO for digital scanning.
